Why hire a Birth Doula?

Bringing life into the World is a life changing event. Your birth story will stay with you for life. A doula  is helpful because she provides a calm, safe service and encouraging presence which can eliminate fear and therefore decrease pain.

I help create a positive and supportive birthing environment, so you can fully be in the “zone” to be present with your body and breathing and birth your baby.

“Kara was our angel during the birth of our baby girl. She held my hand and supported me through every step of the birthing journey. Her calm, caring and beautiful energy, helped me to feel safe and relaxed. She protected this sacred space and encouraged me to connect with my breath and slip into the birthing zone. I can’t thank her enough for sharing this special time in our lives and for her unconditional love, wisdom and care”.

Who is a Birth Doula?

A doula is an experienced companion who understands the emotional and physical needs of a woman and her family throughout pregnancy, birth and the early postnatal period.

My birth doula services in Perth provides continuous support (non-medical) and care for a woman throughout her whole experience. As a doula my purpose is to help women have a safe, memorable and empowering birthing experience.

The word ‘doula’ comes from the ancient Greek meaning ‘to mother the mother’. They are specially trained to emotionally, physically and practically support a woman and her partner through this transitional period in their lives. They have extensive knowledge of the birth process, and essentially what is needed to allow the woman’s labour and birthing hormones work in the most safe and effective way.

Women have complex needs during childbirth and the weeks that follow. In addition to medical care and the love and companionship provided by their partners, women need consistent, continuous reassurance, comfort, encouragement and respect. They need individualised care based on their circumstances and preferences.

Birth Doula Support

During the birthing day, doulas are in constant and close proximity to the mother. They have the ability to provide comfort with pain-relief techniques including breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, massage, and labouring positions. Doulas also encourage participation from the partner and offer reassurance.

A doula acts as an advocate for the mother in Perth, encouraging and helping her fulfil specific desires she might have for her chosen birth.

The relationship usually begins months before the birth and extends into the early weeks/months of the pregnancy period. Some couples in Perth are surprised to learn that on the big day midwives do not stay with them all the time. They have other women and babies to care for, paperwork to complete and hospital policies to follow. When their shift is over, your care is handed over to another midwife. With this another relationship needs to be formed. Whereas a doula stays with you throughout and is someone who knows you, your wishes, what you value and what you want.

Benefits of having a Birth Doula?

Research has shown that having a doula as a member of the birth team decreases the overall caesarean rate by 50%, the length of labour by 25%, the use of oxytocin by 40%, and requests for an epidural by 60%.

What about the father’s role with a doula?

The role of the doula is never to take the place of husbands or partners in labour, but rather to complement and enhance their experience. Today, more husbands play an active role in the birth process.

A birth doula encourages the father to use comfort techniques and can step in if he wants a break. Having a doula allows the father to support his partner emotionally during labour and birth and to also enjoy the experience without the added pressure of trying to remember everything he learned in childbirth class!
